National Mead Day 2010

Recap of Mead Day in pictures

The first Saturday in August is recognized as National Mead Day. Again this year, Alternative Beverage will host the Carolina Brewmasters, the Gaston County Beekeepers Association and the Mecklenburg County Beekeepers Association in a celebration of Mead.

This is the tentative schedule of the days proceedings:

9:00 Gates will open. Arrive early and help us set up. Thanks.
10:00 Welcome  
10:00 - 10:30 A tribute bees and beekeeping by Jason Ramey and Clif Mullis.
10:30 - 11:00 Information about mead making varieties, honey varieties and a short how to session.
11:00 - Kevin Martin & Gary Cathey will teach you how to make mead as they make their batch. Question and answer period will end this session.
12:00 - 1:00 lunch
Hamburgers and hot dogs will be furnished by Alternative Beverage.  We will be accepting donations that will go to a local charity. Everyone is encouraged to bring a covered dish, chips or soft drinks.
1:00 - 1:30 Sampling of different commercial and homemade mead varieties.
1:30 until Participants in the Group Mead will make up their batch of mead.

Attendees should bring:
lawn chairs,
sodas,
covered dishes such as baked beans, potato salad, slaw, chips and picnic foods.

Mead makers are encouraged to bring some samples of their homemade meads and any commercial meads they can share. Homebrewers, feel free to bring homebrews.

Alternative Beverage will supply a cooker, food, paper plates, napkins, plastic ware, ice, water, tables & what ever is needed.

If you would like to bring your equipment and honey, you can participate in the mead making session. There will be about 10 batches of mead made during this event. If you would like us to have a ingredients ready so you can participate call Bill and let him know what you need.

Alternative Beverage will be serving some select meats (depending on the market). We would like to encourage attendees to bring covered side dishes, deserts, drinks and BEER. Our shady lake side park with its expansive grassy area is an inviting place to spend a lazy Saturday. Bring lawn chairs, coolers, frisbees and other yard games. Did I say bring beer - yes, please bring your favorite homebrew or other favorite beverage to share with others. If you bring your fishing pole and don't forget your fishing license. Bring the whole family, it will be fun but please do not bring pets. CLICK here register to attend.

This year we will be adding an new feature to this event - a camp out. Bring your tents, sleeping bags, etc. We will be roughing it after the regular day events end.

There will no charges for attending this event but we will be having a raffle to raise donations for the American Cancer Society.

The gates will be open by 9 am and brewing will be going on most of the day. We will have extra propane burners and kettles on a first come, first serve bases.
