2011 Cider Saturday
November 12th

We will be hosting another Apple Cider Festival on the second Saturday in November.

We are again teaming up with Fritz, better known as Johnny Appleseed, of Windy Hill Orchard & Cider Mill for Cider Saturday. Fritz has arranged to bring in a really nice blend of apple juice that will be perfect for making hard cider or just for consuming.

The pre-pressed juice that we are offering will include Stayman Winesap variety from the mountains of NC. Stayman Winesap is an old southern variety of apple that has a multitude of uses and because of their higher acidity and flavor attributes they make an excellent choice for Hard Cider.

We will be bringing in a couple of large bins of apples that we will cull, crush and press starting at 10 am. We will be starting the crush sooner than last year so that we can finish earlier. The cider that we will be extracting will be great for making hard cider and cyser (cider & honey blend).
 

You can pre-order the juice or you will be able to buy it at the event if we have any left. Our crushing efforts last year netted about 150 gallons so pre-ordering will allow us to bring in enough pre-juiced cider and bins to take care of everyone's needs and wants. You may also want to pre-order White Labs cider yeast because we keep a reduced quantity on hand to keep it fresh.

Due to hail damage and heavy rains throughout much of the region, late season cider prices are much higher then usual. We hope prices will stabilize and come down next season. We will make every effort to get apples for the best price we can so we can reduce the price of this years juice. We have set the current price at $6 per gallon with a 10% savings for pre-ordering before November 7th. Most individuals will need either 6 gallons (to make 5 gallon batch) or 4 gallons (to make 3 gallon batch).
After last year event, I made seven (7) different ciders. We served one (1) at Oktoberfest and it was a real hit. Please bring your ciders and cysers by so we can sample, compare and share recipes. This should be fun. We will also have a couple of homemade sodas for your enjoyment.
 

This is the tentative schedule of the days proceedings:

9:00 Gates will open. Arrive early and help us set up. Thanks.
10:00 We will start the culling, crushing and pressing process.
11:00 Introduction to making cider.
11:30 Sampling of ciders.
12:30 - 1:30 lunch:
Hamburgers and hot dogs will be furnished by Alternative Beverage.  We will be accepting donations that will go to a local charity. Everyone is encouraged to bring a covered dish, chips or soft drinks.
1:30 - 3:30 Culling, Crushing and Pressing the apples will continue as needed.

Alternative Beverage will supply a cooker, food, paper plates, napkins, plastic ware, ice, water, tables & what ever is needed.

Attendees should bring:
lawn chairs,
sodas,
covered dishes such as baked beans, potato salad, slaw, chips and picnic foods
and cider .

Home brewers and wine makers should feel free to bring samples.

If you bring your fishing pole, don't forget your fishing license.

Bring the whole family, it will be fun
but please DO NOT bring pets.


If you plan to purchase juice at the festival, bring your pails or carboys for transporting. We will have acid blend, nutrients, pectic enzymes and campden tablets additives available for those that need them.

Honey, yeast, pails  and carboys transport vessels available for purchase as needed.
